Surgical Orthodontics

At Smile City Orthodontics, we offer Orthognathic surgery for advance cases that require a combination of orthodontics and oral surgery. Surgical orthodontics, also called orthognathic surgery, is used for severe cases of bad bites, jaw bone abnormalities, and malocclusions. For some adults, orthodontic treatment alone cannot fully correct their orthodontic problem. They may also need surgery in combination with orthodontic treatment to achieve a functional, healthy bite. Surgical orthodontics, also called orthognathic surgery, is corrective jaw surgery performed to remedy skeletal problems that affect the ability to bite, chew, and speak. If your case requires surgical orthodontics, we will work with an oral and maxillofacial surgeon to provide you with the best and most comprehensive care possible.

WHAT IS THE PROCESS OF JAW SURGERY TREATMENT?

Just like your regular orthodontic consultation, we will take all your records using our 3D diagnostic tools. After discussing potential treatment options, we will then provide you the contacts for oral surgeons. We will also provide you the referral letter. After you meet with the oral surgeon, we will collaborate with them to diagnose and treatment plan. Orthodontic treatment is most commonly done before and after surgery so that upper and lower teeth meet appropriately. During the initial pre-surgical phase we will level and align your teeth. After aligning your teeth, we will then refer you to the oral surgeon. The operation will be completed in a hospital and can take up to a few hours, depending on your needs. After surgery, you will need to rest for about two weeks. Most patients take some time off of work and school. After you heal, your orthodontist will work on finishing and detailing your teeth to their final positions. Most people have to wear braces for six months to a year after surgery. Then, you will need a retainer to maintain your beautiful smile and hard work. Like all surgeries, there are risks. However, orthognathic operations have been around for years and are proven to be safe and effective overall. If you have any concerns, don’t hesitate to ask questions before the procedure. Most people can’t wait to have the smile they dream of. Whether you need surgery to correct your bite, a malocclusion, or a jaw abnormality, we can help you have a smile you want to show off.
